La Liga leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid will take the title race to the last game of the season after both recording wins at the weekend, however Atletico Madrid’s challenge is over after a shock 2-1 defeat at Levante.

Barcelona maintained their narrow one point lead over Real Madrid after securing a comprehensive 5-0 win against their local rivals Espanyol at the Nou Camp.

In a fiery encounter, Lionel Messi’s early strike settled any Barca nerves, before two second half strikes from Luis Suarez all but sealed the three points for the leaders. Rafinha and Neymar also added another two goals to record a comprehensive win for Luis Enrique’s side.

Real Madrid had a scare at the Bernabeu on Sunday as they overcame a resilient Valencia 3-2 thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo scored his 48th goal of the season to put the Madridstas ahead, before Karim Benzema doubled their lead shortly before half-time. Rodrigo then pulled a goal back for Valencia ten minutes into the second half.

Ronaldo then restored Madrid’s two-goal cushion as he slotted the ball past Diego Alves on the hour mark. Andre Gomes then set up a tense finale when he pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go. However Zinedine Zidane’s side held on to take the title race to the last game of the season.

The shock of the weekend came when already relegated side Levante beat Atletico Madrid to end their La Liga title hopes.

Fernando Torres put Atleti ahead after two minutes, however Casadesus Castano equalised for Levante to level the tie. As Simeone’s side pushed for a second goal, Giuseppe Rossi raced away to net a dramatic last minute winner for the league’s bottom side.

Atleti are now three points behind the leaders with one game to play, but Barcelona’s better head-to-head record means that Atleti cannot finish above them.

Therefore, the destiny is well and truly in Barcelona’s hands as they look to clinch their sixth title in eight seasons. Many thought Barcelona had let their La Liga title hopes slip away after a four match winless run in La Liga closed the gap at the top.

However, Barca have proved their critics wrong and have have bounced back to win their last four games scoring a resounding 21 goals in the process.

Barcelona face Granada in their final game of the season as Real Madrid need a win and hope Barca slip up if they are to keep alive their hopes of winning their first title since 2012 against Deportivo La Coruna.
