The January transfer window is an extremely important part of every team's season in the Premier League. It is also an exciting time for fans of the beautiful game as fans can speculate who should and will be joining their favourite teams.

January is also a time of reflection for every football club. The January transfer window allows each club to reassess whether or not you have the means to reach the goals you have set in the summer. Allowing each team to make a decision as to whether additional players may be needed in order to elevate their current season and standings in each respective football league table.

Doing so will mean that the additional players that enter their new club(s) can make a drastic change to a team’s season - for the better. However, it is important for clubs’ to not just throw money at a particular situation. This is where the backroom staff play a massive part in the world of football.

With proper scouting and analytical research into new signings, you can properly assess what each potential player in each team's list of potential new signings can bring to the club. It is also important to assess what areas of weakness your club may have and find suitable candidates that can stop these exploits. For example, perhaps your team are prone to conceding from set-pieces, or maybe you are lacking a creative attacking outlet. With these examples, it may be important to scout for a tall defender who has a high success percentage in ariel duels - or a skilful attacking midfielder/attacker who can break through defensive lines. January signings can change a season, so it is important to get them right.

In this article, we’re going to be looking at some of the best signings in the January transfer window. Will they all work out, or will some of them fail? With the Premier League, it’s hard to predict anything, but that’s part of the reason why it’s such an enjoyable league. So let’s take a look at who are the best Premier League January signings for the 2021/2022 season - in our opinion.

Phillipe Coutinho to Aston Villa:

The return of Phillipe Coutinho to the Premier League has been eagerly anticipated for several seasons now. Since departing from Liverpool in 2018 to join Barcelona, he hasn’t been able to achieve the heights that the Catalans or pundits were expecting him to. That’s not to say that he hasn’t had a good post-Liverpool career - but he is certainly not the player he once was under the Anfield lights.

Due to the recent managerial acquisition of Steven Gerrard, it was the former Liverpool midfielder turned manager who convinced Phillipe Coutinho to return to the Premier League in hopes that this will re-spark his original form. During Steven’s time as a player and Liverpool legend - the two have garnered a relationship and it is no secret that this chemistry would have played a huge part in this loan deal.

As it stands, Phillipe Coutinho is on loan until the end of the season with Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side. This seems like an excellent move for all parties involved. Only time will tell in how this loan deal will go but should Coutinho maintain his recent form for The Villains, it wouldn’t be a shock for Gerrard to want to turn this loan deal into a permanent one.

Luis Diaz to Liverpool:

Speaking of Liverpool and talented players. Over the past few months, Luiz Diaz has gone from a player to watch to one of the most highly sought-after players in world football. This 25-year-old Columbian is an incredibly talented player who possesses a special way he carries the ball along with his shot power. He is also capable of fitting into multiple attacking positions.

Although the key partnership of Firmino, Mane and Salah may be coming to an end - with the arrivals of both Jota and now Luiz Diaz. With his availability to play multiple positions, along with Klopp’s eagerness to ease new additions into the side - time will tell where Diaz is best suited.

One thing is for certain however, we can’t wait to see what Luiz Diaz adds to Liverpool over the coming seasons.

Lucas Digne to Aston Villa:

Our second mention of Aston Villa on this list. Pundits and fans alike have been debating as to whether Villa has had the best window for the January transfers and with Coutinho, Chambers and Lucas Digne - it’s quite hard to disagree.

It is no secret that Lucas Digne is one of the most talented left-backs in the Premier League. Some fans, Everton included were shocked to hear of the sudden move. The shock was merely days after the arrival of Digne to Aston Villa - Everton’s current manager at the time, Rafael Benitez was sacked. Some fans speculated that the move was due to a conflict between both the player and the manager.

Regardless, this does not detract from the fact that Lucas Digne thrives in playing in wingback positions - crossing the ball into the box into dangerous positions. With the attacking style of play that Steven Gerrard likes to play, we’re certain that these factors will blend wonderfully for both Digne and Aston Villa. What is clear is that he will be a star man for Villa, and it’s a great signing for them in a window that has been full of good business.

Christian Erikson to Brentford:

In recent events, Christian Erikson has garnered an overwhelming amount of support from all football fans across the world. The reason is due to Christian Erikson’s heart attack while playing in Demark’s opening fixture during the Euros competition.

Prior to this incident, Erikson wished to move from Tottenham, this was ultimately granted as he gathered a move to Inter Milan. Fans of Inter Milan were ecstatic to have the world-class midfielder join their ranks. However, this ultimately didn’t work out as planned. Erikson saw a lack of game time at the club and it was apparent that he didn’t fit into the plans of the club.

However, with the shock move of Christian Erikson joining The Bees at Brentford. This is one of the more wholesome transfers in this January season. The reason is due to Christian Erikson is a fan favourite. Fans of both Brentford and the Premier League as a whole are eager to see if Erikson can inject his world-class Tottenham performances into this Brentford side.

Brentford is also a side that has captured the imagination of football fans, they play an incredibly entertaining style of football and have become many fans' second favourite side to support. This coupled with the arrival of Erikson makes for a truly heartfelt story.

Bruno Guimarães to Newcastle:

Newcastle United surprised everyone with the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon. The young Brazillian midfielder shocked the footballing world by choosing to join Newcastle United. Bruno Guimaraes was heavily linked with Arsenal throughout most of this January transfer, but The Magpies have swooped in for the Brazillian at the last minute with Lyon agreeing to an impressive £33 million transfer.

This is a rather important transfer for both the Newcastle club and their fans as they aim to fight off relegation this season. The signings of Bruno, Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood may in fact be the main ingredients to ensure the club stay up in the Premier League.

Donny Van De Beek to Manchester United:

When Donny Van De Beek signed for Manchester United from Ajax in 2020 after five years with the club. The Red Devils were excited about the arrival of the Netherlands international at Old Trafford. For some reason, however, Donny hasn’t had much game time at Manchester United since his arrival.

Many speculate the reason is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not wanting to play him, but now with the arrival of Ralf Rangnick to manage Manchester United - things haven’t really changed.

Donny Van De Beek was a bright spark for Ajax and has shown his talent multiple times over his 27 appearances for Manchester United. The Red Devils have agreed to loan out the Netherlands international to Everton until the remainder of the season.

This move could turn about the turning point for Donny’s career as he will be sure to gain minutes for The Toffees as his creativity could be the key to turning Everton’s season around.
